My afternoon with a hummingbird

It was a beautiful warm sunny summer afternoon on Thursday June 18, 2026. I took a break to sit out on my back deck. I just happened to glimpse at a female rufous hummingbird sitting in the cedar tree beside the deck. She has visited my feeder as few days before in a nasty rainstorm. I had my camera and waited. She kept perching in the cedar tree (something I personally haven’t photographed before) then flying around and then landing at my feeder. So I stayed on the deck, photographing her when I could get a good shot. She has visited the feeder before in much worse weather which are the last two images in the gallery. Photographs are in chronological order.

On the afternoon of June 15, the presumably same female rufous hummingbird came to my feeder in the midst of a rain storm, with heavy rain, winds 3 km gusting between 13 and 18 km. Light poor due to the storm and higher shutter speed for hummingbirds, first 1/2500 second 1/1250.

Friends no more? Remembering “Between Friends” Canada’s bicentennial gift to the United States

In one month the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Fifty years ago, Canada gave a birthday gift to the United States, a glossy coffee table book of high quality photographs that was at the time the “longest undefended border” in the world. It was called Between Friends/Entre Amis. […]
